Hello LSL! You know I've always admired your fashionista sense of style... I am hoping I can take advantage of your skills and ask for advice. I would like to take my mother into the city one day for a hair/makeup makeover. Do you have any recommendations? She is incidentally of Asian origin, and prefers a more subdued style... Please help!!

Hola long lost friend,

My first comment, I'm so honored and delighted :)!!
For hair salons for ladies of the Asian persuasion, my sister has had great personal experience with an Upper West Side spot called Hoshi. They are a Japanese minichain that offer cut, color(new addition)and Japanese perms. They also have 2 other locations- below are the links.

As for makeup, a session at a salon can set you back quite a bit. My cheap eats version is to schedule a demo with a trusted brand- of course, the expectation is for you to purchase the items used, but if you don't plan to return, why worry about keeping up appearances. Furthermore, if you do buy stuff, they usually add on some free swag. I recently discovered mineral makeup, and I love it. I've gotten many comments about how great my skin looks since using the stuff. The most well known is Bare Escentuals on the UES (646.537.0070)- I was assisted by a certified cosmetician named Caitlin who was very knowledgable and enthusiastic. They do one side of your face and have you do the other so you can DIY it at home. For a more Eastern spin, Shisheido which is based on Japanese aesthetics, offers complimentary minifacials and makeup sessions at various NYC department/beauty stores- just check out their website for dates and events : http://www.sca.shiseido.com/index.cfm?select=Event.cfm?promo=104.

Hope this was helpful- thanks again for the support.
